Ceramic Coating FAQs: How Long It Lasts, What It Does & How to Care for It

Ceramic coating is one of the most asked-about services at the Black Tie Detail Center in Idaho Falls. Here are straight answers to the questions we hear most, so you can decide whether it's right for your vehicle.

What is a ceramic coating?

A ceramic coating is a liquid protectant applied by hand to your vehicle's paint. Once it cures, it forms a hard, glossy layer that bonds to the clear coat. That layer repels water and dirt, adds depth and shine, and helps shield the paint from UV rays, road grime and environmental contaminants.

How long does ceramic coating last?

It depends on the level you choose. At Black Tie we offer three options:

  • Ceramic Refresh: about 6 months of protection. A maintenance-level application that boosts shine on daily drivers.

  • Ceramic Plus: about 12 months. A full coating with stronger water beading and easier long-term upkeep.

  • Ceramic Elite: multi-year protection with maximum durability and gloss. A vehicle assessment is required first.

Is ceramic coating worth it in Idaho?

Eastern Idaho brings intense summer sun, dust, bugs, hard water and months of treated winter roads. A coating makes it harder for those contaminants to bond to your paint, so your car is easier to clean and keeps its finish longer. Many drivers schedule a coating in the fall so the vehicle is protected before road salt season.

Does my car need paint correction first?

A coating locks in whatever is underneath it, so the paint should be clean and decontaminated first. Our technicians inspect every vehicle and may recommend a clay bar treatment or polish before coating. For Ceramic Elite, a vehicle assessment is always part of the process.

Can I still go through a car wash after ceramic coating?

Yes. Regular washing is the best way to keep a coating performing. Black Tie's soft-cloth tunnel uses professional-grade soaps, and our Gold wash adds ceramic wax and a high-gloss protectant that pair well with a coated finish. An Unlimited Wash Club membership makes it easy to keep up with washes year-round.

How do I care for a ceramic coated car?

  • Wash every one to two weeks, more often in winter

  • Rinse off bird droppings, bugs and tree sap quickly

  • Avoid harsh, abrasive cleaners and dirty towels

  • Book a Ceramic Refresh to top up protection when water stops beading

How do I book a ceramic coating?
